Yankari Game Reserve and Resort | Explore Bauchi State (1/2)

Did I have expectations when I decided to visit Yankari Game Reserve? Yes, and guess what?! I was disappointed but hey, we are here.

MY STORY

Before I delve into the doom and gloom story, below are some of the sweeteners that attracted me to visit Yankari Game Reserve.

  1. Wildlife safari

  2. Wikki Spring

  3. Historical Musuem

  4. Human settlement tour

  5. Marshall caves

After a bumpy descent into Jos airport and an almost five hours road trip to Bauchi state, we eventually arrived at the famous Yankari Game Reserve. The journey was tiring but smooth and enjoyable, however, I'm not sure I can say it was worth it. The mountains and clear blue skies made me extra excited about the trip, plus my travel buddy was excellent, until we arrived at the reserve and the mood changed.

ARRIVING THE GAME RESERVE

First shocker, our reservation was non-existent or better put, it was given out and they claimed that the resort was filled to capacity. Okay.........so what?? Considering the time we arrived, we didn't have much of a choice.  There's no way we are headed back to Bauchi town in the late hours of the evening. Worthy to mention is that the game reserve is about 90mins drive from Bauchi town.

The hospitality was extremely poor, actually it was a joke. We waited for almost an hour to be sorted. Finally, they offered us a two-bedroom apartment. We were glad for a minute until we realised it was located in the staff quarters and perhaps, for the estate manager who was away at the time. Just great!. *sad face*

A NATURE LOVER'S PARADISE WITH TERRIBLE SERVICE

Well, we tried to settle in but how could we ignore the filthy apartment and non-functional facilities. My bedroom has hundreds of soldier ants, the telecom and ACs weren't working. What a pain!. Did I mention that there was no POS neither is there a bank in the premises?! We also had to transfer money to a staff's account (no other choice, though we were uncomfortable with the arrangement).

Anyways, we were famished and thought to have dinner before hitting the bed in hopes that the next day would be better and filled with adventure. Anyways, we got to the restaurant and violaaaaa......cold food and hot drinks. My travel buddy was so upset and barely ate the food.

A GLIMPSE OF YANKARI GAME RESERVE

The next morning, I woke up and went on a run, more like a brisk walk. I also used the opportunity to visit the museum and wikki spring in hopes that after a shower, we would go on a safari ride and relax at wikki springs. Sadly, it didn't go as planned.

THE MUSEUM

The Yankari Museum was opened by the then Major General Buhari in 1985. The most fascinating thing in the museum was the skull/skeletal remains of an elephant.

FINAL THOUGHTS

What broke the camel's back was when we were informed that electricity supply was only available from 6pm to 6am. What???? My travel buddy, the black tourist, immediately packed up and said we were leaving. He endured but for a while and so we waved Yankari good bye.

It was disappointing and a big shame. This trip gulped a large amount of money and unfortunately, we didn't get value for my money. I was furious!. Yet we wonder why people travel 'to the aboard' on vacation.

Apologies, this is such a horror travel story. Read some of my previous travel stories and get a little comfort. :) lol

Thanks for reading guys. It means a lot to me. Please share your Yankari travel story with us in the comment section. We would love to read from you.

Regards,

Margaret.
