Hi there!

I'm Margaret, a female traveller from Nigeria, and welcome to my personal blog , TheAjalaBug.com.

Here, I document my adventures in travel and life experiences generally. Hope you get inspired!

More to Abuja than the graffiti | keep off under investigation

More to Abuja than the graffiti | keep off under investigation

Like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.” – Benjamin Disraeli

My first distinct memory of Abuja is visiting severally with my Mum, staying at the NNPC quarters all through the visit, watching cartoon and staring at a lush garden at the backyard when everyone was out and about the town. As I grew up, I heard of Abuja as the land of the high and mighty, people who had successfully had a fair share of the 'National cake'. This followed with a lot of seized properties with the label "keep off", "under investigation".

Oh well, while I am passionate about solving some of the critical issues faced by my country and the continent generally, I am also passionate about finding a senator's son. Consequently, my dreams of going to Abuja in search of my gold mine began. As they say, dreams do come true and I’m finally here and this time without Mum :). Can I hear a whoop!

As I drove through the city, I was reminded of Canada with the wide clean roads and proper street signs. Abuja was so gorgeous. I had never seen as many fast cars in all my life, not even in London. I just couldn't but wonder what was funding the lifestyle (sister nosy). After all my unpaid internal journalism, I arrived at Summerset Continental Hotel. The hotel was so gorgeous with royal Egyptian bedding. Quickly, I dropped my bag and set out to view the city.

Asides my jokes on the senator's son, on this particular trip my focus was to visit Usuma Dam, all the other locations I visited were add-ons. The dam which is the fifth largest in the world, has the largest water treatment plant in West Africa and its located just a few minutes from Abuja. I lack words to describe the beauty of the Dam but I would say it's 'A haven of tranquillity'. I would have taken a canoe ride but was too tired from hiking up that all I could think of was to stare at the unreal sight in front of me.

Hopefully, my pictures can show you around Abuja and guide you on what to do in the city in 24 hours #TheNigerianSoloWeekender

Thoughts on exploring Abuja

My weekend trip to Abuja was enjoyable and it left me with so much beautiful memories. The driver who showed me around the town was so witty with unending stories about Abuja babes. I guess as a driver he must have seen it all. The highlight of my trip was definitely hiking up to the view of Usuma Dam.

Ever visited Abuja? What's your various place in the city? I would love to read from you. Feel free to drop a comment and do not forget to subscribe and share.
